Certified Teacher: Exceptional Specialist – Deaf and Hard of Hearing

 

Position is open until filled 

 

Qualifications: 

At a minimum, candidates must hold or be eligible for certification by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board authorizing service as a Special Education Exceptional Specialist – Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Description of the Position:

This is a districtwide assignment acting under the general direction of the building principal(s) of the assigned school(s), as well as the Director of Special Services.

 

To ensure that the educational needs of children who are deaf or hearing impaired are met. Responsible for developing and providing specialized, research-based instruction to meet the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. To advise educators and families regarding the needs of children who are deaf or hearing impaired.

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job is performed in a clean atmosphere. Performance Responsibilities:

  • To use professional knowledge to address the needs of the deaf/hearing impaired learner population, while demonstrating respect for individual differences, cultures, and learning needs  
  • To assess the educational needs of learners who are deaf or hearing impaired as well as gather data to determine learner needs, measure learner progress, guide instruction and intervention and provide timely feedback to learners, families, and staff. 
  • Oversee the use of technical and other specialized equipment for learners with hearing loss  
  • To oversee communication needs and language development in signed and/or spoken language as appropriate.  
  • To provide training and teaching to children or staff where appropriate to facilitate the child’s learning, inclusion and independence.
  • To communicate frequently and collaborate effectively with learners, families, and staff regarding students with hearing loss. 
    • Classroom observations of learners with hearing loss 
    • Teacher training on the implications of hearing loss in the classroom setting 
    • Parent training on the implications of hearing loss and its impact for the learner 
    • Providing teachers with feedback regarding best practices for students with hearing loss in the classroom 
    • Assessment of curriculum needs and teaching strategies
    • Assisting teachers in supporting the personal and social development of learners with hearing loss 
  • Learn and execute behavior management and social skills systems as applicable
  • Complete a MANDT certification course in crisis prevention and maintain certification through annual recertification courses. When dealing with students the case manager is expected to use the skills, methods and philosophies as prescribed by MANDT.
  • Participate in all required staff meetings, IEP meetings, and staff development activities. Required staff development activities include all those that are assigned to you by your supervisor.
  • Ensure through communication and collaboration that all necessary information for IEP and MDT meetings is gathered and prepared.
  • Use web based IEP program for building, reporting, and updating IEP student files.
  • Participate in building professional learning communities and other child focused inquiry teams.
  • Clerical assignments including, but not limited to, filing, record keeping, word processing, copying documents, and data entry.
  • Provide Extended School Year services.
  • Other assignments, activities, and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal and/or Director of Special Services

In accordance with policy GBEC and procedure GBEC-R all new employees must submit to a pre-employment drug and alcohol test. Employee must consent to and provide the necessary documentation (fingerprinting, etc.) to allow for a criminal background check.
